It’s a work in progress but as massage is often the first point of call for people with bodily aches and pains,  providing some approved resources we have gleaned from the trainings with our Allied Partner’s, further supports our work.

As with any practitioner, we are stay informed and within our scope of practice and It is of utmost importance for us to know various signs and symptoms, without diagnosing, and refer to the appropriate allied professional for further assessment.

And offer the non invasive, alternative and complementary health support, that we just love so much about our job. 

 

The Pelvic Floor

In very recent years, there has been a huge rise in awareness of Pelvic Floor Dysfunction and the need for proper diagnostics and treament and the recognition that it is a very under diagnosed and treated condition, that doesnt need to be.

Over the next few years, it is the intent of the peak bodies to  bring awareness on pelvic health out of the dark and into the mainstream conversations and screening tools utilized  as a matter of courses especially in exercise settings and settings that refer onto allied professionals, such as exercise professionals and other complementary health and other non physical therapists that are privvy to witnessing the  emotional stress of such conditions.

 

Screening Tools for Pelvic Floor Function

One of the most important first line assessment tools for any Pelvic Floor Dysfunction are the Pelvic Screening Tests (below).

These should be a minimum with any return to exercise program.

The condition of the pelvic floor and whether it is hyper or hypotonic impacts pain presence in various ways and interestingly, a tight pelvic floor is often the cause of incontinence symptoms and urinary urgency and creates ongoing pain in the lower back and pain during intimacy.. 

These screening tools should the absolute minimum assessment for exercise settings pre and postnatally or by musculo skeletal physios.

However the consenus is Vaginal is Best when properly assessing the condition on the pelvic floor and or if any prolapse and what is prolapsing. 

A qualified Women’s health Physio is licensed and qualified for this assessment. 

Undergoing a treatment protocol for a weak pelvic floor when infact it is tight but low lying,  can make pain much worse. 

Use these tools as a loose guide however seek a professional assessment if any pelvic lower back and pubic pain is ongoing.
